Collection Strategies Librarian

Knox College invites applications for the full-time, twelve-month, benefited position of Collection Strategies Librarian. This position reports to the Director of the Library. The Collection Strategies Librarian provides strategic and operational management of the acquisition, description, access, and assessment of print and electronic resources. In this newly revamped position, the successful candidate will have exciting opportunities to rethink the Library’s collection development workflows and policies. The successful candidate will join a library staff dedicated to working collaboratively to serve the students, staff, and faculty of Knox College and will be part of a team that will plan Seymour Library’s future.

Acquisitions and Collection Management:

  • Work with the Director of the Library to provide leadership and communicate current and emerging trends and best practices in collection development for academic departments and programs and other library users.
  • Collaborate with other librarians on the evaluation, selection, and deselection of print and online book collections, including developing shared workflows for collection development. 
  • Work closely with the Associate Librarian for Digital Initiatives on enhancements to Primo and the user experience and Alma workflows.
  • Evaluate Alma acquisitions fund structure and implement changes to streamline acquisitions workflows, fiscal year rollover, and reporting processes.
  • Ensure that our collections reflect the diversity of our campus community. 
  • Coordinate the acquisition and management of electronic resources and print serials, including databases.
  • Negotiate license terms with vendors and publishers, ensuring contract compliance and maintaining ongoing electronic resource agreements. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with consortia for the purpose of e-resource acquisition: for example, CARLI, CRL, and Oberlin Group.
  • In collaboration with research librarians, provide leadership for evaluation,  analysis, and interpretation of usage statistics and other assessment data to support renewal decision-making process, alternative access options, and/or withdrawal/cancellation.
  • Manage a staff person who will assist with Acquisitions and Electronic Resources. 


  • Oversee the cataloging of new materials for the library collection, with some original cataloging responsibilities, including for Special Collections.
  • Review and troubleshoot metadata and cataloging issues.
  • Proposes & establishes practices for catalog record enhancements that allow for greater discovery and stays informed of evolving cataloging standards and recommends changes to and refines policies and procedures.
  • Supervise student workers. 

Research and Instruction:

  • Participate on our Research and Instructional Services team to provide in-depth reference, formal and informal instruction, and other library services to several assigned academic departments. 

Education and Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Library & Information Science (MLS or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program
  • Knowledge of best practices, current trends, and issues in collections management
  • Experience working with Alma and Primo VE, particularly acquisitions
  • Knowledge of evolving cataloging standards
  • Ability to sustain an affirming, creative, collaborative, and ethical work environment, fostering respect among library and campus colleagues 
  • A commitment to Knox’s mission of building a diverse and inclusive community and to collecting materials that reflect Knox’s diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience cataloging rare books
  • Two years or more experience managing print and electronic resources in an academic library
  • Supervisory experience
  • Will consider candidates with more limited Alma and/or cataloging experience if they can demonstrate the desire and ability to learn quickly

  • Student assistants (2-4)
